Gold(II) Telluride
Gold(II) telluride is a chemical compound with the formula AuTe2. It consists of gold ions in the +2 oxidation state (Au2+) and telluride ions (Te2-) in a 1:2 ratio. This compound forms yellow crystals and is insoluble in water.
Gold(II) telluride has a layered crystal structure, with each layer consisting of stacked Te-Au-Te sheets. The gold atoms occupy octahedral sites in the sheet, while tellurium atoms form trigonal prismatic coordination around the gold ions.
This compound is a semiconductor with a bandgap of approximately 0.5 eV. It has potential applications in electronic devices, such as thin-film transistors and solar cells. However, its toxicity and rarity limit its widespread use in these fields.
