Gold(V) Fluoride
Gold(V) fluoride is a chemical compound with the formula AuF5. It consists of one gold atom and five fluorine atoms arranged in a trigonal bipyramidal geometry. The molecule has a molecular weight of 303.95 g/mol and appears as a yellow to brownish-yellow crystalline solid.
Gold(V) fluoride is a strong oxidizing agent and reacts violently with water, releasing corrosive hydrogen fluoride gas. It is soluble in polar solvents such as nitromethane and sulfur dioxide, but insoluble in nonpolar solvents such as benzene and hexane.
The compound has been studied for its potential applications in catalysis, electrochemistry, and materials science. It can also be used as a precursor to synthesize other gold compounds.
Due to its high reactivity and toxicity, gold(V) fluoride should be handled with extreme caution and with appropriate protective equipment.
