Arsenic Triselenide
Arsenic triselenide is a chemical compound with the formula As2Se3. It is a grey-black solid that is insoluble in water but soluble in many organic solvents. Arsenic triselenide has a layered crystal structure consisting of covalently-bonded As2Se3 units arranged in sheets that are held together by weak van der Waals forces.
Arsenic triselenide is a semiconductor material with a bandgap of approximately 1.5 eV, making it useful for applications in infrared optics and photovoltaics. It exhibits strong nonlinear optical properties, which makes it attractive for use in devices such as optical switches and modulators. However, arsenic triselenide is also toxic and exposure to it can cause serious health problems, including cancer and neurological damage. Therefore, appropriate safety measures should be taken when handling this compound.
