Barium Cyanide

Barium cyanide is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula Ba(CN)2. It is a white crystalline solid that is highly toxic and soluble in water. Barium cyanide can be prepared by reacting barium hydroxide with hydrogen cyanide gas:

Ba(OH)2 + 2 HCN → Ba(CN)2 + 2 H2O

Barium cyanide is commonly used in organic synthesis as a source of cyanide ions. It can also be used for electroplating or as a laboratory reagent.

Due to its toxicity, barium cyanide should be handled with extreme caution. Contact with skin, eyes, or inhalation of the powder or fumes can lead to severe health problems. Proper protective equipment, such as gloves and a respirator, should be worn when handling barium cyanide.

In case of accidental ingestion or exposure, seek medical attention immediately. Treatment may involve administration of calcium gluconate to counteract the effects of cyanide poisoning.
