Arsenic Tetrasulfide
Arsenic tetrasulfide is a binary compound composed of arsenic and sulfur, with the chemical formula As4S4. It appears as a yellow-orange powder that is insoluble in water but soluble in organic solvents.
The compound has a unique crystal structure, consisting of As4S4 molecules arranged in a zigzag pattern. The As-S bond lengths are approximately 2.17 angstroms, and the molecule has a distorted tetrahedral geometry.
Arsenic tetrasulfide is used in the manufacture of pigments, such as Indian yellow and Naples yellow, and also as an infrared-transmitting material for optical devices. It is also used in the production of semiconductors and as a component in some glass compositions.
It should be noted that arsenic tetrasulfide is toxic and can pose a health hazard if ingested or inhaled. Proper safety precautions, including appropriate protective gear and ventilation, must be taken when handling this compound.
